momoko_momoko goes mushroom hunting!
Dec. 4th, 2007 | 04:02 pm
so, miss maya learned that mushrooms can be used as dye! in fact, many fungi can be used.
so what does she do? in december?
go searching anyway!
the back yard has an amazing amount of mushrooms right now, and searching on campus has come up with at least 4 weird fungi from on and under oak and pine trees.
once I have the house to myself, I think I'll try this out! results when I have some.

dying from pom
Nov. 23rd, 2007 | 08:36 pm
well, I tookt he rind and boiled the f**k out of it, adding the seeds in once mom was finished flavoring her syrup with them. added a glug of white vineger to see if that did anything.
a while later, we get something that dyes wool a brown.
I'm putting it in the fridge to set for a while. the liquid is pretty red and I hope I can get something neat out of it.
meanwhile, I'm gonna order a whole buttload more spinable fiber for this break. considering it took me maybe 7 hours to go thru a quarterpound, and that involved figuring out how to work the damn thing, and keep tightening it.... but I spun up a quarterpound of long-fibered wool dyed by sakina needles and two-plyed it and have it blocking in mom's bathroom. whee.
right now I keep playing with the merino combed top I finished spinning. more stuff will be made this winter break,,,, just two more weeks...

I kinda got distracted this week with trying to spin a sock weight yarn.I'm about half way done... dunno if I'll have enough for socks. oh well.
meanwhile finished a yello cotton sock, started on it's mate's toe, started a sock with the boot wool. I'm finally getting thru the sock yarn! well, I have two more pairs to make once I finish making the mates to the finished ones. need to figure out something to make with t he leftovers...
meanwhile, yesterday crocheted a pillow bunny with the chunky handspun that I kool-aid dyed, and one of those netted hats that are so popular, crocheted with the pink and blue handspun. worked on the pinkie for argento-chan and sorta made a myspace for greenie and friends in lou of a proper website. last week I made a nice scarf out of the mawata silk I bought and spun up. I plied it which make it even cooler. and I made a scrubbie for the kitchen, and something else but I can't remember what. ah well....
anyway, found my animal eyes. and I'll try to make more friends for greenie (the original one is for sale at wholly craft!)

spinning with my mother
Oct. 28th, 2007 | 04:15 pm
so, I show mom some of the yarn I just spun up.
"oh, I see you bought pencil roving" (very thin roving)
"oh no, I just split it off and pulled it thin before I spun. it's easier to spin fine even yarn from that, you should try it."
"no, that's cheating!"
oh mom....

mood:
tired
so many things in progress... but last night was productive and finished up a few things.
first, I actully spun some silk worm coocoons into yarn and croheted it up into a little scarf. it's so warm and soft and snuggly, I just love it. and it was just as easy as I read.
I crocheted up a little scrubby cloth for the kitchen and I crocheted up in two evenings a kitty rug. atticus, the rather large boy cat that rules the house seems to enjoy it, but andy-kitty is terrified of it. I think we scare her too much. oh! and I finished up a hat on monday. thought I was completely out of my white fuzzy yarn, but of course after I use another green yarn to finish up the trim and the ears, I find another ball! I might use it to add kitty ears to the hat and some kind of glove trim.
and so, there are many scarfs, lace, and critters in my project bin that are waiting to be finished. I think the sock I have with me is ready for a few rows of ribbing and binding off.
but! I've been working on a knitting culture paper... I say another hour or two on it and it'll be ready to be dragged around for everyone to read. ((gimmie a TA job, pwease!?))
god, I hope I get that camera for christmas. this blog is bare and is in need of pictures... esp of my lovely new scarf. *snuggles and purrs in it*
and meanwhile I should really find somethign to replace my aspercreme. it gave me hives yesterday and alieve isn't cutting it at all. stupid wrists...

Commissions!
Oct. 16th, 2007 | 08:11 am
yes yes... everyone is doing it, but I figured I might as well do so too.
so, I'm taking crochet critter commissions. you pick a kind of critter, a color (anything but yellow) and about what size you want, and I'll let you know the price. it'll run from 20 dollars for a 4 inch or smaller one, to 50 for a 10 inch or bigger.
okay? lemme know here, or email me, and I do take pay pal!
check out my flickr site for examples.

socks with leftover handspun yarn from the village- one done
afghan with the super-cheap yarn- about 3 feet in and grown to 5 feet wide. honest to god, it was two and a half feet wide when I started.
hopefully monday I will get to the yarn store for more sock yarn. my feets are getting cold.

Im a tiger!

last weekend I ended up with my parents in a little historical recreation place. it was nice, and I got ahold of some white skeins of handspun wool. (plus one of purple yarn dyed with pokeberry)
so I decided to dye it before knitting socks for mom.
I ended up dying like 4 fulls skeins of yarn and two scrap balls to test colors and fibers :3
wheee.
I now have some intensely bright yarn to play with and I've already knitted one sock, half done with the other. ^^
oh god, I have so much yarn right now. I swear most of what I brought home was yarn. got most of mom's odds and ends of her stash, and 36 balls (at a dollar each) for an afghan, plus the handspun stuff.
but yeah... I need to get on the ball and make more shit. I was going to sew today but I didn't get around to it, but I'll try the kingdom hearts inspired tote bags then.

philosphy: rules and perfection vs going for it without worry
Sep. 4th, 2007 | 03:55 pm
my mom and I are very different when it comes to our approaches to making things. she is precise, her technical skills are excellent. but she has to have a pattern or something to work off of.
what I make is much less perfect, but I rarely work with patterns unless I'm making them now. all I need is a little sketch of what I want the finished project to look like and off I go.
mom says the difference between us is a lack of rules. when she was growing up, things had to be done a certain way, things had to be perfect. mistakes weren't tolerated. what she doesn't realize is that she was very perfectionist when I was growing up, hell, I remember her screaming at me because I wasn't following instructions, or doing something without her help. she hated letting me do things on my own, or letting me experiment. she was furious the time she found out I made a website (it was about sailor moon for heaven's sake, not porn, but did she listen?) without asking for help, or telling them about it first. (even though it was on the time I was allowed to be on the comp, she likened it to me sneaking out of the house at night. )
and did I HATE that.
it's not a lack or rules or perfection that rules my creativity, lord knows enough have been shoved down my throat. it's a willingness to just mess around and see what happens. I try to do the best job I can, and I am very good at most of what I do. I do it because I want to make something. if you are going to make something, whatever it is, you can't worry about it, otherwise it won't be fun and you won't do well.
you gotta go with it.

paper dolls
Aug. 23rd, 2007 | 08:48 pm
but not the usual sort of paper dolls. japanese paper dolls! I have two badly translated books from the library, a bunch of pirated pictures from ebay auctions, and the wrong wrong wrong kind of paper.
and yet I really do like what I've made! I've made two of the big sister kind and several of the bookmark kind, including some org13 ones. ^^
make two felt mascots this morning, they are a little on the sucky side, and a large 3-d one that is awesome. crocheted stuff, I made 2 8 inch ones.
did a knit plushie too, an odd tall, lacy bunny girl ^^
I might drag everything home this weekend for pictures. that and stuffing, I'm out of stuffing.

wooo! no new pictures!
but the t-shirt mermaid/vaporian dress is finished, along with two altered shirts
huge ass armless black cat is done. it's hideious but someone will buy it.
need to buy bulk keychains or something simular.
next project? doing something green and random crochet wise atm, but friday I plan to break out the white jersy knit I bought last week and make up a bunch of things. I hope I have enough stuffingfluff to last thru it. something bizzare and slightly shiroi lolita methinks. I have a ton of cheap-ass lace....
if I have time, I will break out the black fleece and make heartless shadows. they are soooo kyuuuuute. <3 and sellable.
